Roots of light
After walking through the exhibition and talking about the impulse behind the works, one woman came to me at the end of the walkabout and said "I need to show you something". Intrigued, I followed her. We stopped in front of my "Family Tree".
I had explained to the group before, how this work was an attempt to 'bridge and connect my two worlds - my past in Austria through the family pictures I stitched onto the tree...and my present life here in South Africa by attaching them to a dead tree that I picked up on one my travels here.
My work has always to do with understanding the shadow in me...solving the riddle that is my life. When she pointed at the beautiful shadows the light above the glass case made on the base of the tree...she said "look, here are your roots...made of shadow and light".
I had seen the shadows before and remarked on how beautiful they were...but until it was pointed it out to me, I had not understood its metaphorical value.
What a gift she gave me !
